With all the talk about IP-based videoconferencing, you'd think everyone would have already hopped on the bandwagon. But, the truth is, the VTC market is overwhelmingly ISDN-based with an eye towards IP-based conferencing open all the time. When surveyed, the major VTC manufacturers all see a trend towards IP-based integration of systems happening within the year, but all agree that over 90% of the installs are still done the new, old-fashioned way; with a twist - network connectivity.

So, I turned to the experts for answers: the ProAV dealer. Traditional AV dealers are still integrating over 40% of the VTC systems sold, so I enlisted a young, old pro to tell me how it's being done today and where it might be heading.

The following interview was conducted last week with Laurie Harris, Major Account Manager with Ace Audiovisual, a Woodside, NY-based ProAV systems integrator that installs, services and designs AV systems all over the Northeast (and Colorado). Laurie is a 13-year veteran in the AV market (yes, 13 years is definitely a veteran) as both an integrator and a client of VTC installations. She was with JP Morgan for 10 years as part of the global Video Conferencing rollout team, so Laurie got involved in planning, design for VTC globally, as well as managing day-to-day A/V and Video Conferencing support. Before joining Ace, she owned a consulting firm that was dedicated to supporting VTC specifications and installations.
