Q: What do you believe were the biggest changes in the industry in the last five years? How did they change things and what impact did those changes have? A: On the supply side, we've seen a tsunami of lower priced, high quality products come to market. Some reasons? 1) Advent of new
digital technologies like DLP and D-ILA. The decline of CRT technology
and also of amorphous silicon technology for applications at the very
high and low ends of the brightness and resolution spectrum. Analog
is dead. Long live digital! The overall impact is that more people are willing to use projectors. The technology is markedly better than 5 years ago -- brighter, higher quality images and machines that set themselves up.... plug and play. On the channel
side, the increasing consolidation of the channels to market is a major
change that reflects fewer "traditional" AV dealers willing
to compete with large players.
Q: What is the state of the market now? What are the propelling forces and what are the barriers to growth? A:
The market is in
turmoil. Too many suppliers vying for the end user's buck. The bottom
line will be continuing shake-outs in the industry -- both at the supplier
and at the channel level. The "propelling" forces are greed
and avarice. There are no barriers to growth -- the industry has proven
that it can overcome all barriers over time.
