Direct-Digital Interfacing - The future of computer video connectivity

Let me try to explain... DFP was the first connector that arrived on the market and supports the first version of the standard. This connector is already being phased out. The P&D connector is a unique, larger connector that is used on certain InFocus projectors, so that everything can pass through one connection including USB. The P&D connector can be used for both digital and traditional VGA 'analog' signal types.

The newest and dominant connector types are DVI-D and DVI-I. These two connectors are almost identical. DVI-D has 24 'pins' and supports DVI connections only. DVI-I has 29 'pins' and can support both DVI and traditional VGA 'analog' signal types. This allows manufacturers to save space and confusion on the connection panel of the projector, and it allows you to use either a VGA or a DVI adapter...you choose!

Now, since your notebook may not be the latest model and have a DVI port on the back, manufacturers such as Margi Systems offer PCMCIA adapter cards that support direct digital connection. These cards allow you to connect your older laptop to projectors using the latest technology. Fortunately, the PCMCIA cards are not very expensive.

Projector manufacturers are hoping that you will join them on the DVI bandwagon. This new technology should really make your life simpler…we'll see!
