Emerson is one of the best known companies in the world, with products for telecommunications, electronics, heating, ventilating and air conditioning, and process controls. With offices, plants and other facilities around the world, Emerson developed a state-of-the-art corporate conference center near its St. Louis, Missouri headquarters for employees to come together for meetings. Each year, employees from Asia, Latin America, Europe and North America gather in St. Louis to discuss achievements and plans for the future of the corporation. Emerson's conference center is regularly updated, and they recently installed three new Christie Digital Vista X3 DLP projectors. Each projector lights up one of the three 63 x 84 inch rear-projection screens forming a glass wall at the front of the room. Its U-shaped table, surrounded by seating for board members and perimeter seating for employees, allows for an unobstructed view of the screens from any position. Prior to installing the Vista X3 projectors, the boardroom had three CRT projectors. However, the CRT's color matching and brightness were a constant challenge and the projectors needed to be reconverged regularly. When Emerson began
his search for a projector with DLP technology he consulted with AV
systems and projection specialists BESCO, Inc. Over a period of two
years, George Brosie of BESCO, Inc. and Dan Fry, Manager of Audio Video
Systems, Emerson, researched and tested many different projectors. The three Christie Digital Vista X3 projectors and all of the other audio visual equipment are kept in a small room behind the screens. Each Vista X3 is mounted on the ceiling of the small A/V room, positioned to aim directly at a dedicated screen. The projectors are then controlled from three computers within the boardroom and provide presenters a great deal of flexibility, with the ability to show either the same image on all three screens or a variety of contrasting graphics and videos on separate screens. Presentation content ranges from PowerPoint presentations to satellite TV feeds and videotapes. The A/V room where the projectors are mounted is a small space with a limited amount of projection distance. Each Vista X3 therefore had to be equipped with a 1.2:1 fixed lens in order to fill the screens. Emerson also required that BESCO maintain seismic reinforcements and make the projectors earthquake proof. To meet this requirement, BESCO put in secondary cabling and reinforcements that are tied to a separate structure. This will prevent the projectors from falling from the ceiling in an earthquake since there are two sets of anchor attachments, including a standard ceiling mount bolted to the ceiling structure and then safety and support cabling bolted to a secondary structure. The installation of the new projection system took two BESCO employees three days to complete in March.
