Indiana's Wayne Township Installs 200 Projectors

Dukane's Projectors in Elementary, High Schools

Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township, Indianapolis, Indiana has installed over 200 Dukane Data/Video Projectors over the last three years in both their elementary and high schools. The purpose for installing the projectors was to help the teachers and students become actively engaged in the learning process.

"The Video/Data projectors we decided to use as a focal point are provided by Dukane Corp. We chose to use Dukane projectors for a number of reasons including their industry leading Five-Year-Warranty, 24/7 service, complete line of projectors and document cameras, plus their understanding of the classroom needs", said Pete Just, Technology Project Supervisor, M.S.D. of Wayne Township.

The focal point of the Dukane projectors is the Wayne School District developed, "PresenStation". The PresenStation system provides each classroom with a ceiling mounted data projector receiving its video and data sources from a specially constructed desk containing a laptop, video network connected VCR, and a document camera. The laptop is used by the teacher and is connected to a network so Internet access is immediately available. This permits the class to view Internet content, courseware programs, videotapes, school distributed video, distance learning, or the images from the document camera.

Complemented by four additional desktop PC's in each classroom, these tools provide a powerful connected presentation environment for teacher and student use.

The benefits for students and staff are many, including:

· PC Portability (i.e. laptops).
· The ability to display objects or "artifacts" at a moment's notice.
· Local video source with a VCR and document camera in classroom
· Distributed video network for school wide based announcements.
· Simple and familiar technology that is easily accessible.
· Student excitement about group presentation projects that are shared by video
· Accessibility to web sites without having to go to labs.

"Now beginning its third year, the initial feedback is starting to come in and the results are positive. Teachers and students alike have found that the PresenStation multimedia classrooms are keeping everyone interested, and engaged. It has begun to encourage teachers to think in different ways about how to facilitate instruction and how to use the power of the Internet and multimedia in their classrooms", said Paul Kreitl, Director of Technology for MSD of Wayne Township. "The greatest effect of these units will ultimately not be in their traditional use, but in the way they stretch teachers and students to consider unconventional learning styles and methods" Paul continues.
