The Cisco Internet Home Briefing Center shows how the home of the not-so-distant future can be wired. Starting with an e-Control system and touchpanels from Crestron Electronics, this demonstration home, which is not open to the public, shows videoconferencing, multi-player gaming, video on demand and home management.

The home includes a large living room, fully functional kitchen, bathroom, kids room, home office, central office with DSL and garage. You can take a virtual tour of these rooms.

The home contains both a traditional wiring layout used in most existing homes (phone and power only) and also a wiring layout used in new and custom homes (data, voice, video).

Cisco's 1,700 square-foot Cisco Internet Home in San Jose shows how high-speed, always-on Internet connection enables and controls an array of consumer devices and appliances in the home.

"In the last 12 months there has been an exponential increase in demand for our home systems," said Randy Klein, Crestron's Executive Vice President. "People want integration in their homes. The Internet has brought convergence of entertainment and the computer."

Crestron technology controls seven rooms throughout the Internet Home, with six rooms featuring CT-1000 touchpanels and the living room utilizing an STX-1550C touchpanel. The homeowner can control anything in the house via Crestron e-Control, using any of these touchpanels or a home computer with a Web browser. Crestron's new I3 software package delivers personalized Internet content such as stock quotes and weather reports directly into each Crestron touchpanel via Cisco's Residential Gateway.

The Crestron CNX-PAD8 processor and the new CNAMPX-16x60 amplifier distribute audio from eight different sources to eight zones throughout the house in real time.

Using the Crestron STX-1550C touchpanel for control, the living room of the Cisco Internet Home doubles as one of the eight audio distribution zones and a Home Theater. Crestron control also handles individual room lighting control.

The heating and cooling control for the Internet Home are handled by Crestron's integration with the ComfortZone system from Carrier Corporation, a member of Crestron's I2P (Internet Industry Partnership) Program. Variables like temperature, humidity and mode of operation all can be controlled with real-time feedback via the Crestron touchpanel located in each room.

Crestron control technology also interfaces with the Cisco Internet Home's security system, providing real-time status of all the home's security zones. Via any Crestron CT-1000 or the STX-1550C, the home security system can also be armed and disarmed.

Homes built or upgraded with standard Cat 5 structured wiring, fiber or coax, high-speed connectivity are available for around $1,500 plus the Cisco Internet Home Gateway. Finally, for anywhere from $15,000-100,000, consumers can have a fully custom high-speed Internet Home solution that includes a complete whole-house Crestron Home control solution.
