DLP Technology Expected to Increase Its Market Share by 75% by the End of 2001

September 20, 2000 -- "For 1999, we estimate that projectors featuring DLP technology accounted for 15% of the European market," said Tony Bicknell of Decision Tree Consulting, a market research company covering the European audio- visual market. "However, we believe that the fastest growing part of the European market this year and next will be projectors weighing 3kg or less - a category in which DLP-based projectors are uniquely well placed: this, together with the increasing brightness of projectors based on DLP technology, indicates that we can expect to see DLP account for 20% of the market in 2000 and 26% in 2001."

There are now over fifty products based on DLP technology in the market. Since early 1996, more than 500,000 DLP subsystems have been shipped. Over the past four years, DLP technology-based projectors have begun to win some of the audio-visual industry's most prestigious awards, including, in June 1998, an Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

At the heart of TI's Digital Light Processing technology is the Digital Micromirror Device optical semiconductor chip. The DMD switch has an array of up to 1,310,000 hinged, microscopic mirrors which operate as optical switches to create a high resolution, full color image.
