"Based
on Stanford Resources' Quarterly, we're on track for another mind-blowing
record year. But, my sources say that even their numbers are off.
The real numbers are actually higher than they even realize as
companies like Compaq and Sony ship more products than Stanford
reports. But, all in all, their report is a great read on the
market - a market that's outgrowing almost everyone's expectations."

"There
is a strong shift toward projectors being sold through traditional
computer channels. This is important because the current crop
of projectors are poised to be bundled with notebook computers
as well as incorporated into company intranets."

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Sept.
13, 2000--Stanford Resources' Projection Displays Quarterly reports
that developments in projector technology contributed to significant
growth in the projector market in the second quarter.
According to Sweta Dash, director of LCD and Projector Research, "Manufacturers
are breaking weight barriers every year by using smaller displays, improving
lamp technology, and improving other components. At INFOCOMM'99, manufacturers
introduced five-pound projectors; at INFOCOMM'00, the focus was on three-pound
models.
"In addition," stated Dash, "there is a strong shift toward projectors
being sold through traditional computer channels. This is important
because the current crop of projectors are poised to be bundled with
notebook computers as well as incorporated into company intranets."
Key findings from 2Q00 Projection Displays Quarterly
include the following:
-
In 2Q00, 105,078 units were shipped to the U.S. front-projector (LCD
and reflective/DLP) market.
-
Approximately
29% of front projectors used reflective/DLP technology in 2Q00.
-
The
total value of U.S. front-projector shipments in 2Q00 was approximately
$533.8 million.
-
In
1Q00, the majority of front projectors produced 600 to 1,000 ANSI
lumens of brightness, but in 2Q00, the majority (43%) produced 1,000
to 1,500 ANSI lumens. DLP projectors producing 600 to 1,000 ANSI lumens
captured 67% of the market in 2Q00, while those producing 1,000 to
1,500 ANSI lumens captured 32%.
-
In
2Q00, about 25% of the total front-projector market was composed of
less than/equal to 5-pound projectors and 54% was composed of 6- to
10-pound projectors. In the DLP projector category, the less than/equal
to 5-pound projector category dominated with 55% of the unit shipments,
and 6- to 10-pound projectors followed with 44% of the unit shipments.
-
In
2Q00, InFocus was the branded vendor leading in unit shipments of
projectors (not including Proxima-brand projectors), with 21,944 unit
shipments. Proxima-brand projectors followed with 11,820 unit shipments.
InFocus-brand projectors accounted for 21% of the unit shipments in
the U.S. market, and Proxima-brand projectors accounted for approximately
11% of the unit shipments.
Projection Displays
Quarterly covers the U.S. front-projector market (LCD and DLP technologies)
by providing the estimated unit shipments of each supplier during the
previous quarter, along with a four-quarter forecast of unit shipments
for all suppliers. The report also shows the total value of each company's
projector shipments.
Projection Displays Quarterly analyzes trends in technology, weight, pixel
format, brightness, display size, street price, and distribution channel.
The report also lists major projector models being sold on the U.S. market
by leading suppliers; this information facilitates product positioning
by allowing vendors to compare their projectors to others' and plan future
offerings. Each quarter, Stanford Resources surveys the top 50 A/V dealers
nationwide and major computer distributors to gather information on market
share and trends.
